Fall Fairies
From Fairy Land, a new flight of sprites and a gourd house! I’ve had great fun working on these. I think I’m done for awhile, unless they all sell out on Saturday! I have a second house made, and some good gourd possibilities for another one, but other projects are calling.
The fairies are similar to the acorn and pipecleaner versions I made earlier in the year, but these are stuffed with painted faces. The gourd house is from two gourds, with wood burned fern designs and pinecone shingle embellishment. I’m working today on quilted leaves in green and autumn colors to use as rugs. Traced around leaves from the yard onto fabric, then layered with felt and a bottom fabric and free motion quilted.
Sometime soon I may actually get started on the VCQ Blue Muse challenge!
Check back on Saturday for the virtual studio tour!

Dolls with Yarn Hair
This Saturday at the South of the James Market its a Cucumber Festival! The vendors have been encouraged to support the theme, so I’ve made a cucumber pennant string for my tables and a cucumber apron to hold my scissors and change! Should be fun!
Also have a few new items for inventory – sold the first yarn-hair doll last time out right after I put it on the table! In an effort to reduce my button stash, I’m trying out these jars of buttons, which include some beads and a gold cord for string them. Now for good weather on Saturday!

Here’s art doll, ‘Stars at Night’. Response from in house critics was lukewarm, and included the word scary, but I’m happy with her for a first attempt. Hands and ears need some work. She glows in the dark, which is cool! Pattern was from the book, Ceative Cloth Doll Making, by Patti Medaris Culea. I think of her as my no-worry-wedding fairy!

Meet Raggedy Anne, in a blonde incarnation! I’d all the Christmas presents bought and wrapped, when my fellow grandperson said, “Lily needs a doll from her Grandpa. Can’t you make one for me?” At just past 1 year old, she may be a bit young yet for dolls, but here’s what I came up with! And Lily gave Anne a big hug, after helping her mom rip open the package.
The doll was made from an old pattern, probably from the 70’s – the price on the envelope was 85 cents! Lily loves plush yellow toys and blankets, so Anne’s hair is from a fleece jacket (those sleeves were too long anyway). And the quilted dress and pockets on the pinafore are from leftovers from my studio curtains. (Initially she only had a dress and pantaloons, but customer Grandpa felt strongly that she should have pockets, and they worked better on the apron than the dress.) There was just enough red and white striped fabric lying around to make the stockings! The body is from an old white t-shirt, tea-dyed.
