Spring on Cole Mountain

Today as I hiked a verdant trail I saw fairies.

They swirled above a mountain meadow on yellow wings,

Sipping from hawkweed and cinefoil, wild azalea and columbine,

To calls of towhees and tree wrens.

A brisking breeze piled clouds high over the Allegenies and boulders lurked like huge trolls in the shadows of the fern forest.
