Yesterday the rain held off long enough for 10 of us to take a hike sponsored by Chesterfield County in the Ivy Creek Natural Area, just north of Charlottesville. Nothing blooming yet, but buds were filling out and we identified a couple of winter trees whose names were new to me – ironwood and yellow birch (smells like beechnut gum!). We were treated to several beautiful views of Ivy Creek, babbling Martin’s Branch, and remains of old rock walls. There were even a few snow drifts still tucked away from the 5 feet of snow that Charlottesville has received this winter. I wore my pocket vest (see the October 27, 2008 entry) and it worked very well for easy access to camera and other gadgets.
